Gothic literature combines ordinary life with the supernatural. It is used to show the chaos that occurs when reality and supernatural combine. Specific elements of gothic literature are used not only in written works, but in movies. Edward Scissorhands is a movie that incorporates gothic elements. Edward is a man that was created by a scientist, but the scientist dies before he is able to put human hands onto Edward. This leaves Edward to live with scissors as hands. A saleswoman, named Peg, finds him and takes him to her home. Although at first it seems that Edward is fitting in with the neighborhood, his abnormality begins to create fear in the neighbors. There are many themes and elements of gothic literature that appear in Edward Scissorhands. The characteristics consists of a dark setting, eroticism, and physical aberrations. Themes that were present include judgement based on appearance and suffering as a result of being misunderstood. Edward Scissorhands incorporates many characteristics of gothic literature.
