All Immigrants are required to learn and adapt to new environments and rules of their society. Immigrants face many challenges and setbacks during their journeys to America, some ending positively and others negatively. Through different pieces of writing, various immigration experiences are displayed. Throughout the immigration experience, a person can face many challenges and forced to overcome many confrontations..
During the immigration experience, the immigrant will experience atrocious emotions and must avoid numerous encounters. I heard someone holler, “¡La migra! ¡La migra!” I looked over my shoulder and saw several vans screech to a halt, blocking the entrance to the camp… A few managed to get away. We were lucky.” (Pg. 131-132) These experiences lead to a cemented emotion of fear and terror when thinking about them. Most immigration experiences come with bad emotions when immigration patrol or police are involved. The Jimenez family faced many challenges coming to America illegally, and the worst was avoiding and escaping immigration police. Most journeys to America start well, but almost always end up back where they started. When the author is recollecting his early days living in London and trying to adapt to the new environment. “I remember my first days in London, learning how to take the Tube to Russell. Square, riding an escalator for the first time, being unable to understand that when the man friend “piper” it meant “paper”, being unable to decipher, for a whole year, that the conductor said “mind the gap” as the train pulled away from each station” (pg. 195). When one immigrates into a country they are not familiar with, they have to adapt to the new community, and learn the rules of society. The author immigrated from India to London, and had to decipher all the rules and customs that apply to his community which he did not have experience with in India. Even the simplest things must be learned, and when moving into a new environment socially and physically, you must learn the rules and adapt to the community.
