The main idea of the reading from Vatican I was that it is coherent in the Holy Scriptures that the Pope has a promise to fulfill. "it was to Peter alone that Jesus, after his resurrection, entrusted the jurisdiction of the supreme pastor and rule [pastor et rector] of his whole flock saying: 'Feed my lambs' and 'feed my sheep' (John 21:15)." (Vatican I, Pastor aeternus) The followers of Christ are represented as the lambs and it is the Pope's responsibilities to nourish, care, and provide for us in a spiritual sense. Those that disagree with the form of government that Christ established oppose with the teachings of the Word of God. "Indeed, it is necessary to recognize-and it is a title of honor – that some churches owe their origins to the activity of lay men and women missionaries." (John Paul II, Redemptoris missio) Pope John Paul II reinforces the importance of laity since they are vital in spreading faith. Lay people are essential because people can conceive the Gospel and acknowledge Christ through them. Based on their baptismal dignity, it is their obligation to spread the divine message throughout the
