While the United States usually falls in the middle, Finland ranks near the top. “The survey compares 15-year-olds in different countries in reading, math, and science” (Partanen, 976). Finnish educators make it their goal to focus on equality and cooperation, which is one reason why there has been such academic success. American schools seem to thrive on competition and excellence. Teachers must go through an extensive amount of programs, exams, and training to be considered for a teaching position. They must also have a superior grade point average. Jackson states in her article, 4 reasons Finland’s schools are better, “Only one in 10 students who apply to teacher education programs are admitted, according to the Center on International Education Benchmarking (CIEB).” In addition to superb grades, future teachers must obtain a Master’s degree and write a Master’s thesis. After going through extreme measures to become a teacher, parents feel confident in who instructs their children and try not to interfere with their authority. Teachers in Finland teach very few hours compared to U.S. teachers (see fig 2.) While they do not get paid much more than teachers in America, Finnish teachers make about $3,000 more yearly. Furthermore, studies done by the OECD found that not only do American teachers receive the smallest salary than any other countries, but they work the longest hours. Since Finnish teachers work fewer hours, it gives them more time to plan their lessons and come up with unique ways to teach that coordinate with how their students
