Hester was a very independent woman. She is judged and shunned for having Pearl. Adultery was forbidden in this time period, so their natural reaction is to be mortified at Hester for committing this horrid sin. The townspeople that are so quick to judge Hester for becoming impregnated with another man, whom was not her husband’s, child but what they overlook and do not think is important is that: Arthur Dimmesdale is just as responsible to blame for the birth of Pearl. The townspeople blame Hester for everything and put all the blame on her because she is the woman, she committed the sin. Arthur Dimmesdale committed this sin as well.
