2000 Fashion Trends Essay

The 2000’s is referred to as the mash up decade (Kamal 2015). Fashion in the 2000’s moved away from the minimalist approach, incorporating the fusion of trends from several different styles (Kamal 2015). By the early 2000’s, designers started to incorporate more colors and patterns into their designs (Kamal 2015). They also had inspiration from vintage clothing of the 1960’s, 1970’s and 1980’s (Kamal 2015). Women’s fashion took a more feminine turn as more women began wearing more revealing clothing (Kamal 2015). Men’s fashion of the 2000’s resembled fashion of the 1980’s (Kamal 2015). Boho-chic is a combination of nontraditional, eclectic styles, inspired by gypsies, hippies and artistic clothing of the 1960’s and 1970’s (Oliveira 2013). The style is a balance between messy and feminine, and at the same time establishes a sense of uniqueness and individuality (Oliveira 2013). The trend caught on quickly after the 9/11 era because of its emphasis on creating a personalized, eclectic look (Oliveira 2013). The boho-chic style represented being timeless, classy, and closet smart, being feminine and self expression (Chic Fashionista 2008). One was able to express different aspects of their mood and personality through the clothes they were wearing (Chic Fashionista 2008). In the beginning of the decade people had money, so everyone spent their money on name brand clothing and accessories (Unreich 2009). Towards the middle, everyone was in a recession causing them to recycle old fashion (Unreich 2009). Women mainly dressed with confidence (Unreich 2009). The internet also had a huge effect on fashion of this decade (Unreich 2009). It made hard to get styles, less hard to get and more accessible (Unreich 2009). It also made fashion more critiqued than ever before (Unreich 2009). But instead of focusing on what labels someone was wearing, it focused on how confident someone was and how they had the ability to creat their own signature style (Unreich 2009).
