Women in Europe and the United States had to occupy industry and social life as men left to fight in the Great War in the late 1910’s. A new kind of woman, with short, bobbed hair, shorter skirts and freer clothes to match her new, independent lifestyle appears. (1920-30, 2) These types of women were to be known as flappers. Flapper’s didn’t truly emerge until 1926. As the idea of gender equality became a reality, it is no wonder that the right to vote was given to women during this time. (USHistory, 1)

Fashion designers played with fabric colors, textures and patterns to create new styles of dress. Coats, jackets, and evening dresses were often trimmed with fur. Hemlines rose for most of the decade but dropped slightly toward the end. Stockings and shoes assumed a greater prominence now that they were more visible. Men wore cuffed trousers and flannels. With that they wore two-toned white and tan or white and black shoes. They also wore black leather shoes. Men wore knickers as well, which were short knee pants. They wore that with a sweatshirt with casual shirts. They would also wear suits, with colored shirts, with patterned silk ties, and black bowler hats. (LindyHopping, 1) Unlike men, the women’s style was a little different. To women, fashion was very important. The women’s fashion changed as time went by; at first women has skirts that were calf length but when the years went by the skirts got shorter and shorter. By 1926, the skirt was so short it was reveling their knees.
