The topic of family violence is one that many consider to be a private issue, but in fact, it’s quite the opposite. Family violence is a serious social issue that is prevalent in Quebec in which many have become victims of abuse. Whether the abuse is physical, psychological, emotional or sexual, escaping this environment becomes difficult, especially if there are children involved. Fortunately, there exist numerous resources in Montreal that aim to aid those who have fallen prey to these types of situations. In this report, I will discuss my experience interning for one of these organizations. Specifically, I will be talking about the projects and activities that took place, as well as the role I played. SOAFS offers a variety of services, such as consultations, legal clinics, workshops, support groups, and so forth. There exists two locations in which this organization operates: Montreal and Laval. Additionally, in June 2004, they opened an emergency shelter known as Athena’s House. For more serious cases, women and children may seek refuge in this shelter for up to three months. As most of The Shield’s clients do not speak French or English, communication can be difficult, but with the assistance of cultural intermediaries, SOAFS is capable of providing their services in up to 17 different languages to better meet the needs of the diverse clientele.
