Periods are not especially enjoyable to put up when one has access to feminine hygiene products; adding the complication of homelessness brings inconvenience to a level of misery. Periods are an unpleasant reminder of the vulnerability those living on the street face. Menstruation is uncomfortable and people who do not have access to pads or tampons often have no choice but to bleed through their clothes. The issue becomes more problematic when they must wear their soiled clothing because a change of clothes is not available. S.A.F.E House is located off I-40 near Lomas and serves over 1,000 families annually. Their vision is to form a safe place where women that can “live together in a community where any form of domestic violence is unacceptable”. S.A.F.E House also has programming aimed at healing the wounds, breaking the cycle, and improving the lives of families who have faced domestic violence in the community. Women who come to S.A.F.E House are often escaping domestic violence and have no other place to turn. These women are left with nothing and this organization aims to provide a safe and comfortable place for women to heal. They empower women by promoting independence and increase self-confidence through education, tools, resources, and advocacy. S.A.F.E House is one of the largest in the nation, housing over 85 adult and child residents. S.A.F.E House provides emergency shelter which helps to keep families fleeing domestic violence off the streets and out of danger’s way. This nonprofit will bridge the gap between homeless shelter feminine hygiene product supply and need. It will provide the positive support that women who are homeless desperately need to feel safe and supported. This organization will start by partnering with S.A.F.E House and submitting grants to receive grant funds to support the organization. Because S.A.F.E House supports over 1,000 women and their families, the organization will budget for at least 500 units of reusable feminine hygiene products for homeless women; this will allow the organization to serve most individuals who menstruate at S.A.F.E. Menstrual cups cost around 30 dollars and reusable pads cost around 20 dollars for a set of five. With the menstrual products, women will also receive hand sanitizer, cleansing wipes, and instructions for use. In total, the organization would need to request at least 30,000 dollars to cover the cost of each feminine hygiene kit. Additionally, it will be sustained by one organization head and one assistant. Products will be ordered in bulk, stored, and given to individuals who menstruate at S.A.F.E House upon arrival. The first grant should sustain a year of feminine hygiene product purchase.
