Gehart and Tuttle (2003) describe structural theory as a structured set of rule that sometimes need to be restructured to help the family get the rules and hierarchy of the family back in the order it should be. This theory covers all areas of the family it looks at the family the subsystems that are have influences on the family unit. The counselor does an assessment of the family, its rules, boundaries, hierarchy to observe the dysfunction. Once the counselor understands the family he/she joins mentally the family, therefore they unbalance the entire system, thus causing the family to re-establish it hierarchy, boundaries and rules as they current stand. In the family discussed above this could have been implemented causing Everett and Lois to be stricter parents when it came to Rodney. Not because there were not parenting correctly their busy lives allowed him to do as he pleased without any consequences until he was an adult. In this process, the counselor could have restructured the hierarchy of the family causing Rodney to realize although he was an adolescent he was still the child in the family. Although, this may or may not have worked it could have possibly saved some heartache along the way. As adolescents, we think that our parents don’t know anything or don’t understand because they never experienced what you are going through. Parents do understand and they are only looking out for their child’s best interest and safety. Although, it isn’t until we are adults or have children of our own that we can see the importance of a family. Unfortunately, we only have one set of parents and one day we will look back and miss them when they are no longer with us, none of them are perfect but some do a better job than others. The importance of a good social support system of friends or community programs can be indispensable, at one time or another we will all need
