Many factors can cause physical disability to a person. A person can disabled caused by brain injury, cerebral palsy, orthopedic conditions, developmental delays, occupational accident, post stroke, and so on. According to NHIS’ data collected in the year 2013, 15.0% of noninstitutionalized U.S adults (18 years and older) have difficulty in physical functioning, and 32.9% have at least one basic actions difficulty or complex activity limitation (CDC, 2013). People who are suffering from physical disabilities limits their freedom and also suffers from financial burden have low self-esteem and sometimes, they also suffers from depression. Families who also takes-care of people with physical disability also takes a toll, financially and emotionally. There are theraphies that can help the impaired person to recover their mobility back; however, the financial cost is relatively high -- both equipment-wise and personnel-wise. Some states does not even offer teaching licence in adapted physical education.
My family is also going through the same ordeal. I have an older sister who suffers from Dawson Disease, a rare type of encephalitis acquired measle virus. Not every educational institution have the capability and resources to operate programs like these, which is why it is important for both private and public sector to support these programs.
