American Prison System The process of leaving prison can be very difficult, especially for ex-offenders and felons that have had to serve lengthy sentences. Transitioning from a life inside of prison to a life outside can be difficult for some people. Some inmates commit crimes at a young age and are sentenced to a lengthy incarceration. Some inmates entering the prison system at a young age do not know the proper way to behave in the community when released. All these inmates know is a prison lifestyle. Prison may have what is called a Work-Release program. This program provides selected inmates an opportunity to be employed in the community while incarcerated. It focus on the transitional needs of inmates that are soon to be released. This program helps supports the inmate 's family, and reduces the cost of prison. The inmates must have good behavior and in the final stage of his or her imprisonment. The inmates are screened by prison managers to make sure they are of no threat to the community. The Work Release program is at most minimum security prisons but are at a miniscule amount of maximum security prisons. The money earned from the program are used to pay fines and fees, family support, prison housing, transportation cost and set aside money for inmate upon release. All prison across the United States have schooling for inmates to get their G.E.D. This a great opportunity for inmates because majority of jobs in America require at least a G.E.D. to be employed. While there are programs for inmates to go back to school some inmates go into prison with an addiction so they may have to go through a rehabilitation center or “drug rehab”. Halfway houses are transition periods that allow inmates to move from prison to the community in steps. Inmates who do not follow the rules or “run away” are returned to prison or charged with the felony offense of escape(Fagin 289). These house are designed to help inmates be a productive citizen in the community. The house will also assist in finding jobs for the inmates and teach the basic skills to be a part of the
