Leadership is the ability to have the inspiration to encourage others to follow and accomplish a mutual assignment. Being in this role requires an individual to have the strength to handle sufficiently amounts of responsibilities and accountabilities of every personnel that the individual is in charge of. With the acceptance of an invitation to interview a nursing teacher whose in a role of a leadership position, Sharon Price a clinical nursing skills instructor at the University of South Alabama. She has tremendous amounts of experience and education to perform the role of a leader. She graduated from the University of South Alabama in Birmingham School of Nursing and received multiple degrees, Bachelor of Science in nursing, 1977 and Master of Science in Nursing, 1980. Mrs. Price views leadership as “power in numbers,” but there should be an individual who has the force to spearhead the enterprise. Which means that there is not just one leader who can tackle a task on their own, but an individual with a force that can work together and focus as one entity. Mrs. Price also states that within a group different personalities can benefit everyone, with all these different views and thoughts that everyone has, there needs to be one individual who can focus and prioritize the resources to ensure the successful achievement of the task at hand, which is a leader. The characteristics that a leader must have that is defined by Mrs. Price are having compassion, knowledge of group dynamics or conflict resolutions, superior knowledge of subject matters, diplomatic skills, and organizational with communication skills. She also knows that a leader keeps everyone involved in tasks through communication, education and setting an example. As a leader in her classroom she tries to cultivate an atmosphere of accountability, ensuring that all students understand the course material, expectations, and have the freedom to ask her questions when needed. During the interview with Mrs. Price the following healthcare issues were discussed cultural considerations, ethical issues, conflict management, and malpractice. Cultural Considerations “Nurses view patients through their personal experiences with culture and their personal histories. This may lead to problems, such as misinterpretation of communication and behavior that result in limitations in planning and implementing patient centered care that meets the patient’s need”(277). There are many different cultures that are brought into the hospitals, and Mrs. Price was asked about how she felt towards these considerations. She absolutely shows respect towards another culture because sometimes it could be a significant element. The reason for this is because in promoting an environment that is acknowledging and valuing another person’s culture could foster various beneficial medical outcomes. A prime example is when a patient is conducting a cultural ritual with their beliefs, with Mrs. Price being their nurse; she would leave the room and not return until they had completed their religious ritual. Mrs. Price is willing to respect her patient’s culture as long as there are no factors that would prohibit her from doing so, such as safety regulations or infection control. “A leader would make every effort to seek their understanding that their perception of the patient’s cultural norms is correct”(Price). Ethical Issues With receiving a dangerous patient who is sentence to lifetime in prison for multiple accounts of murder, a nurse is to treat for this patient. How …show more content…
Examples include medication errors, failing to prevent falls, not adequately providing for patient access to a call light when he or she needs help, a lack of assessment of risk for falls, and not instituting appropriate interventions”(192). In circumstances that errors are made during patient care the most immediate action to take is to notify your supervisor and the patient’s physician. The reason to notify these members is so that appropriate risk management processes can be followed. When dealing with medical procedures such as blood administration, mistakes are prone to happen, the steps following the error is most important. In a scenario that a patient missed a dosage of medication, Mrs. Price was asked to explain how she would handle this situation. “The first step would be to insure there was evidence that the patient had not actually received the dose. Did the nurse just neglect to document it? If the lapse in dosage was confirmed, I would contact the physician to alert him and request guidance as how to proceed”
