There is no greater feeling than flying over the snow going 80 miles per hour on a snowmobile. The snowmobile industry has provided many communities with millions of dollars for businesses such as dealerships, hotels, restaurants, and manufacturers. The average snowmobiler takes 3-4 times every winter for some fun. The snowmobile has changed in design since the first attempts to add a motor to a sled. The snowmobile has become lighter and faster. People today enjoy using snowmobiles for recreation as well as for work in hard to reach places. Over the past 57 years Ski-Doo has kept its popularity because of changes in performance and design. People in the United States should know about the …show more content…
According to the article in “Evolution of Snowmobiles: From Sleds to Extreme Machines,” the early snowmobiles made it possible for modern snowmobiles to be so good. Carl Eliason is often given credit for inventing the first snowmobile that he called a “Motor Toboggan” which had a 2.5 horse power engine on a wooden toboggan sled back in 1924 (“Evolution”). However, expert Stephen Campbell says there were other snowmobiles built earlier than Eliasions. Campbell writes that’s Eliason snowmobile had some things modern units have like a “front mounted, liquid cooled engine that used a jack engine.” One of the inventors that gets a lot of the credit is O.C. Johnson. Campbell says, “O.C. Johnson built an Over the Snow Machine in 1909 that was 10 feet long while Virgil White developed a snow conversion vehicle for the Ford Model T in 1913” …show more content…
Ski-Doo also added a chip that you can add to the motor that can read throttle position and RPMs so you know how your riding and it helps add more power to the motor when needed. Ski-Doo made a chip that can also read your altitude and how hot or cold your engine is at that altitude so it knows when to turn the fan on to cool down your engine and if it’s too cold it will help it to add more antifreeze (Basset). If you have both of these chips on your snowmobile, you can program them both to help program your exhaust valve timing and ignition so you can have the best performance you can get out of your
