In this essay I will discuss the recent controversial topic of if Corrine Rey should have sacrificed herself and her daughter for twelve others. I will look with a non-bias attitude at the ethical issues that have ascended from this topic and if individuals should put their lives first before others. I will investigate this case identifying with ethical theories Utilitarianism and Kantian Ethics to choose if one side is morally more right than the other.
On Wednesday 7th of January 2015 Corrine Rey picked up her daughter from daycare and was on her way back to her workplace Charlie Hebdo, a magazine office. She was racing back once picking up her daughter to attend her weekly editorial meeting which was about to take place. The magazine often publishs controversial religious issues and this is why the magazine was targetted. Corrine Rey herself is a cartoonist for the magazine. She was threatned by two French Jihadist gunmen at the entrance to enter the code for the magazine office. If she did not comply, they would shoot her as well as her daughter. She entered the door code and they entered to murder 10 of Rey’s co-workers as well as two cops before escaping in a car. Rey hid under a desk just outside the office during the attack and watched the gunmen kill her fellow employees, cartoonists Georges Wolinski and Jean Cabut. While attacking the shooters said that they would not kill women, but heavily enforced that they needed to convert to Islam and wear a veil. Corrine…
