There are many reasons why the cosmetic industry has become a concern for the people of the United States. Many people have had diseases and cancers that can be linked to the chemicals that are placed in their personal care products and cosmetics. Little has been done for putting regulations on these chemicals being placed in personal care products until recently with the Personal Care Products Safety Act. The chemicals that are being put into cosmetics are affecting every person who uses any type of personal care product without that person even knowing it.
Since the “1938 Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act” (Dahl) the FDA has not set any regulations on the chemicals that can be used in cosmetics. According to the FDA only eleven chemicals have

Many people are unaware of the chemicals they are putting on their bodies through the products they use on a daily basis. “Women use an average of 12 products a day, containing 168 different chemicals. Men use fewer products, but still put 85 chemicals on their bodies” (Lupkin). When people don’t read the labels on their products they are exposing themselves to many chemicals that can have serious effects on their bodies. One chemical that is common in products is phthalates, on labels as it is commonly known as a fragrance. According to Safe Cosmetics “phthalates are found in nail polishes and hair sprays, they can also cause cancer, endocrine disruption and developmental and reproductive toxicity.” If people don’t educate themselves they become vulnerable to many chemicals that can have terrible effects. There are multiple ways for someone to educate themselves on the products they are putting on their bodies. One way is to ask a doctor or physician about the effects of certain products. Also websites such as Skin Deep and Safe Cosmetics offer informative information on both which chemicals are in certain products, what those chemicals actually are, and how those chemicals effect the body. A completely natural beauty regimen is more expensive than personal care products you would buy at the drugstore. A drugstore brand cosmetic can cost somewhere in the $5 to $25 range; the reason these prices are so low is because it is cheaper to add more chemicals in the product than it would be to put natural ingredients. Because natural ingredients are more expensive and take longer to produce is the reason why most all natural products are so expensive; having a price range from $30 to $50. Another reason why chemicals are so popular in cosmetics is because when chemicals are applied to a product it in some cases causes the product to last longer on the shelf than it would if the same product was made from natural
