Essential Personal Skills in Effective Business Management
Better management of a business or an enterprise involves not only leadership skills but personal skills. According to Merriam-Webster online dictionary, management is defined as “the act or skill of controlling and making decisions about a business, department, sports team, etc.” (, no date). A business manager defines the strategies, models and implementation techniques for an enterprise. A business manager defines the best way to utilise a robust leadership and personal skills to achieve a firm’s goals and objectives with scarce or surplus resources. Income generation of a firm can be improved if a business manager has what it takes to judiciously manage its resources.
This article will concentrate on some of the needed personal skill to effectively manage businesses. Such personal skills are human, conceptual and technical skills as defined by Katz (Katz, 2009, p.2). According to Katz, “a skill implies an ability which can be developed, not necessarily inborn, and which is manifested in performance, not merely in potential. So the principal criterion of skillfulness must be effective action under varying conditions” Katz (2009, p. 2).
