Connectivity and Its Discontents As society develops, using phones, emails are some of the popular ways for people to interact with friends. However, Sherry Turkle argues problems of continuing use technologies as the way for communicating in her article “Connectivity and Its Discontents.” Turkle summarizes three key reasons based on her real experience and her observations. Sending text messages, emails are convenient for everyone especially for busy schedules. If people have free time, talking with friends face to face is a good option. However, people need to deal with work every day. They do not have time to hang out with friends during work time. Text message provides convenience for people to organize their schedules. They can prioritize work message first and then respond to their personal messages. More importantly, it helps others deal with work and personal relationship easily. When they review each message, they have flexible time to construct their messages. Both friends and work partners can get the answer they expect to get. It allows people to satisfy business partners’ requirement easily. In personal life, using text message ensure that people, to a large extent, do not bother each other. If people insist on scheduling normal communication , it is easy to cause burdens for their friends; because they probably have other things to do in their private life. My grandmother, who lives in China, did not know how to use text message in a few years earlier. Because of the time difference, my mother needed to schedule for a long time before each face to face communication online. She did not feel any joy since she had to delay her work for each meeting. When we went back to China, we decided to teach my grandmother how to use text message. After she could use text message, my mother felt reborn. We could talk with my grandmother when she was free. It also benefited my grandmother. Once she would like to share exciting news with us, she could record it through text message. Right now, we have close relationships because we almost contact each other every day, and we share news conveniently.
