1) There are many issues in the Criminal Justice system in the United States. To me, two of the most significant of those issues are overpopulation, known as prison crowding, and mental illness. Both of these were touched upon in the documentary “Prison State” Many jails and prisons do not have adequate beds to accommodate the amount of people that come in. Many jails try to get the lower offences out of there as quick as possible to make room for what I call, “real criminals” Prison crowding is one of the most urgent issues in the Criminal Justice system. This issue is caused by insufficient jail space. The only solution to this issue would be to build more jails and prisons. Because let’s be honest, crime will never stop. Which social policy for dealing with crime is this initiative providing? How do I think this program will positively impact the larger society? The LIFE program is brought to you by Lipscomb University as a way to bring college education to those that are in prison. Many people take their chance at an education and the doors it opens for granted, but for the women at TPW (Tennessee prison for women) it takes them behind prison walls. What they learn there goes far beyond the text and lectures. I believe the social policy this program is providing is rehabilitation, this means to resocialize offenders. You teach prisoners useful skills and educate them. This program will greatly benefit the larger society, it was stated in the news video that most who receive a degree while inside never return to prison. This statement leads me to believe that once they are released they continue their education and go on to find jobs. This is better than the alternative, living off the system for the rest of their lives, or going back to their old
