Then the town followed behind them which caused the instance of mob mentality. Later on it was determined that all were innocent of witchcraft and it was all made up, because of the fear of a little girl.
Other than the Salem Witch Trials there was another incident of mob mentality and hysteria: The Kent State Shootings. In May of 1970 there was a horrific tragedy. At Kent State
University in Ohio riots had been taking place for months against the Vietnam War. In the start of
May the level of violence escalated to vandalism and destruction of property by the protestors, most of them were students(Kent State Shootings). On May 2nd, the mayor of Kent declared a state of emergency and the governor deployed the National Guard(Kent State Shootings). On
May 3rd, there were approximately one thousand national guardsmen on campus to help control the violence and looting(Kent State Shootings). With the arrival of the National Guard tensions rose(Kent State Shootings). Then they escalated when the governor made the statement,”
These rallies and riots are a demonstration of how unpatriotic these students are.”(Kent State
Shootings). He later said,” They’re the worst type of people that we harbor in America. I think
