Introduction
Service members put their lives on the line daily for us. Stationed overseas they endure strenuous situations, most life changing. Our Soldiers deal with life altering situations and are faced with difficult decisions every day. For some the battle doesn’t always start on the battlefield. For them it can start before being stationed out or deployed. Studies find it may be due to transitions rather than the strain of combat. The United States Military Suicide rate and been rising over the recent years. Its apparent that suicide prevention programs are not working hard enough to prevent these events from happening. I believe there need to be more implemented programs and new strategies to help put an end to the rising suicide …show more content…
VA’s Mental Helath Program, National Center for PTSD, Defense Centers of excellence, Nation Resource Directory, Wounded Warrior Project, Red Cross, Mental Hhealt America and Givean hour. These are all organizatons that are meant to help our service members.
C. Changing their approach
1. The military suicide prevention they offer to Veterans are not relatable for them. They need to look at the problem from the perspective of the Service members. How are they going to relate to a health professional? They wont even be able to come close to what they’re feeling. Their approach is wrong and unrelatable.
2. They are taught to surpress their emotions which is not healthy especially for those who are suffering in silence. Military members are taught to tolerate pain and suck it up. This leads to depression and anxiety disorders.
3. Their core values need to change such as how they teach them to be self-reliant and self- sacrificial. Asking for help can be frowned upon. They expect them to have all the answers for every possible situation. This is not a good tactic, for the fact that they can feel ashamed or worthless when they can solve problems.
4. They become too afraid to ask for help.
