Sam’s parents in this short story did almost the same thing for the 20 some years that Sam had been gone. They tended to there Acker of land, also there goat, cow, and chickens (Singer 160). Sam left at a young age for few reasons, but mainly he wanted to achieve a better life outside of his small polish village. He worked as a baker in New york and sent money back to his parents when in was economically appropriate. Also, after Sam had returned, he said that their small Polish Village had not changed a lot since he left 20 years prior. Since the village did not change very much, there were very behind on there technology “Mother, didn’t you get my cable?” (Singer 163). Another thing was how Samuel’s parents reacted and were after he got back from America. They were fairly shocked by this, but they were also very questionable about how well he was living in America. They asked unique questions like “Do Jews make a living?” and “Do Jews still remain Jews?” (Singer 164). It Also shows that Samuel as well as his parents carried there Jewish heritage through small detail like not touching money on the Sabbath to men being superior. This is a prediction, but personally think Samuel kept these customs because he possibly stayed in the Jewish part of New York. These are some of the things that stayed the Sam between Sam’s coming and going from his small polish
