The old man is waiting for the fish to jump so that he can catch it. While he is trying to keep the fish on the line, he loses a lot of fishing equipment, but it can be replaced. The fish suddenly makes a lurch causing the old man to wonder why the fish jumped. He realizes that the fish heads north hoping that the fish would jump. Finally, the old man is able to reach the fish. He uses a gaff to grip the fish and pulls the fish were he can see it. He then cuts six strips out of the fish to eat. He forces himself to eat even though he is not hungry. He throws what is left of the fish back into the water to eat it later. His left hand then cramps which encourage him to eat. Also, he realizes that other men do not like to fish during hurricane month. However, he knows that no hurricanes are coming, because of the appearance of the sky. The old man knows that he must not let the marlin learn that it can get away. However, the old man wants to catch the fish so bad that he prays the prayers that he know. In addition, the old man sees an airplane and thought about how it would be inside one. At this point, the fish was still hanging on under the skiff. The old man was able to find a dolphin which bit his line causing his left hand to hurt again. He decides to eat the dolphin the next day and
