Reference number: 2167-6527 Epigenetics is the study of modifications to the genes of organisms. The way in which our genes behave can be altered by our epigenomes without changing our DNA sequence. They can be altered by different factors of our environment such as what we eat, drink, etc. The video on epigenetics was very informative. Prior to watching the video, I had no knowledge of what epigenetics was nor have I ever heard about it. I thought the experiments in the lab on the mice were a great way to explain how two organisms with the exact same genes can still have subtle differences due to epigenetics. The profound way in which researchers are conducting the research on epigenetics will produce great promises especially …show more content…
Some risk factors for diabetes include an inactive lifestyle, obesity, and aging. The forthcoming of this disease in an individual is quite complex and results from the interaction of both the genes and the environment. Many studies point to epigenetic modifications due to this interaction.
Living a healthy lifestyle is a hard; eating healthy, working out, getting enough sleep, avoiding second hand smoke or avoiding smoking yourself, etc. I use to wonder why people even bother to attempt to live a healthy lifestyle. We are going to die, anyway right? I soon learned that, that statement was very vague. The results of my questionnaire are as follows: my healthy life expectancy (free of cancer, heart disease, and diabetes) is 60 years old, my life expectancy is 71 years old, and my potential life expectancy is 95 years old. Per the questionnaire there are some important food groups that I should incorporate into my diet more, such as greens, fruit, and whole grain. Greens, fruit, and whole grain can lower the risk of heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and cancer. The questionnaire also suggests that I get more sleep, have faith, and be friendly. Making these changes can potentially add 24 years to my
