Energy is a source of power that most all humans utilize daily. Whether a person is driving a car, charging a cell phone, or browsing the Internet they are consuming energy. While some energy alternatives are better than others, each have their own unique ways of producing energy. Some are cheap while others are expensive. Some are renewable some are not renewable. Oil resources are diminishing and the need for new forms of energy such as nuclear, wind, solar, and hydropower are needed to keep the world running smoothly.
Nuclear energy is the harnessing the power of the atom. Atoms are the building blocks for all matter in the universe. “Energy is what holds the nucleus together. There is a huge amount of power in an atom 's dense nucleus. In fact, the power that holds the nucleus together is officially called the "strong force. Nuclear energy can be used to create electricity, but it must first be released from the atom. In nuclear fission, atoms are split to release the energy.” - (Dunn)
Nuclear energy is housed inside nuclear reactors, also known as power plants. The machines that are required to harness and extract the energy from the atoms during nuclear fission are held in large towers. Uranium is the fuel that powers these reactors. Uranium is becoming even more abundant metal as the metal is being mined for more commonly within the past decade. Uranium is mined from the ground and broken down and ground into pellets for the reactors. “A single uranium fuel pellet…
