The problem is that why do we think nuclear power is good? And why not use wood or coal or something other that nuclear power. Science has identified this issue when they monitored how much resources we use and we have to understand how we won’t run out of resources. This issue affects us because one day we will run out of resources such as coal gas or oil and it will lead to a difficult like which will affect human population. Uranium has several uses and one of them is to power a nuclear power plant. The power plant will supply electricity for use by mankind. Another use is nuclear weapons. Uranium 235 and 238 is used to make nuclear weapons. ("Uranium: Its Uses and Hazards.”) The process is complicated and requires enrichment so it can be successful. (“Uranium Enrichment”) Uranium is also used in gyrocompasses and aircraft weights. Uranium metal is used for production of high-energy X-rays. ("Uranium: Its Uses and Hazards.”) I will focus on the use of Uranium in nuclear power plants.
Natural uranium consists of three isotopes: uranium-238, uranium-235, and uranium-234. Uranium isotopes are radioactive. Uranium-238, the most common isotope in uranium ore has a half-life of about 4.5 billion years. It is used for nuclear weapons and is most common. Isotope 235 is important because when it splits it releases a lot of energy, which is called nuclear fission. Uranium 234 is formed …show more content…
There are two types of nuclear waste, the high-level and low level. The high-level is extremely dangerous and low level is the release of radiation. ("Nuclear Waste.") Nuclear waste is the material that nuclear fuel becomes after it is used in a reactor. It looks just like the fuel that was loaded into the reactor. Metal rods made up of fuel pellets. But when the reactions occur the contents aren't the same. Before the reaction occurred the rods were mostly made up of uranium. But after the reaction occurs the uranium splits into almost all the transition metals on your periodic table. ("Nuclear Power Is Expensive and Bad for the Environment ... It's Being Pushed Because It Is Good For Making Bombs.”) Nuclear waste is bad for the environment because when the waste is released into the environment such as water it can very quickly contaminate the water and hurt the marine life. Also traveling water can flow very quickly and pollute many portable water sources. It also contaminates the soil and damages the farm life and makes it impossible for crops to grow. ("7 Reasons Why Nuclear Power Is Bad for the Environment and the Nation.") But its not only the nuclear waste that is harmful it is also the nuclear power plant itself. If a power plant has a meltdown, which means an accident in which severe overheating of the nuclear reactor results in
