Lawrence expressed that we are programmed to think that life will be easier for us if we are attractive. So, people who are thought to be better looking are more able to be successful. Lawrence opens this point by saying, “from a very young age we’ve been conditioned to believe that our success and our happiness is highly dependent on our attractiveness.” I believe this point to be extremely true and something that we do not often consider. I was impressed and overwhelmed when I first heard Lawrence say this as it is not something I had yet considered but the more I think about it, the more I realize that right from the moment we are born this message is overly exposed to us in many forms. Lawrence elaborates on this when saying, “Think about all the Prince and Princesses you say, slim, toned, tall, proportional features.” This made me think back to my childhood where I was constantly influenced by Barbies and Disney Princess dolls and believed to be a princess I needed long blonde hair and to be beautiful. The relevance of this point is incredible as I believe it is something every young girl can relate to. Also, the fact that we are not aware that this message is being so exposed to us until we think about it, was incredibly eye-opening for me as I began to wonder what other messages the media had drilled into my mind without my knowledge. Lawrence then goes on to say, “The magazines celebrating severe weight loss is actually unhealthy.” This made me realize that not only was I exposed to this message as I child but I am constantly exposed to it now and so our women of all ages. It is incredibly sad to think that we can have a preconceived idea of how successful we will be, based on our physical appearance. Many studies have shown that employers are more likely to hire attractive staff and it is due to this need for everyone
