When a patient is brought in to the emergency room via ambulance or private vehicle there is a protocol that is followed to treat this patient quickly. The nurses and doctor(s) will start by performing a STAT twelve lead EKG or ECG, which is short for electrocardiogram. This test "measures the electrical activity of the heartbeat … An ECG gives two major kinds of information. First by measuring time intervals on the ECG, a doctor can determine how long the electrical wave takes to pass through the heart … second, by measuring the amount of electrical activity passing through the heart muscle" (American Heart Association, 2015). During an ECG the doctor can determine if the heart is being overworked, is enlarged, or if it is pumping too fast, too slow, irregularly, or normally. (American Heart Association, 2015). The next radiological test performed is a chest x-ray to determine if there are any other causes or reasons for the patient to be experiencing chest pain, or to determine if there is fluid or air in or around the lungs. An x-ray can also determine if there is an enlarged heart. The next set of test will require the laboratory to draw some blood. In these tubes the lab personnel will normally draw a complete blood count (CBC), comprehensive metabolic panel, (CMP), cardiac panel, brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) and possibly a PT/INR, and D-Dimer.
