I. Biological Effects of Stress
Workplace stress do not only affect the mind of an individual; long term stressors implicitly can lead to physical damage, and biological consequences. According to American Psychological Association, some common symptoms of overwhelming amount of stress includes muscular problems, including tension headache, back pain, jaw pain, gut and bowel problems such as heartburn, acid stomach, flatulence, diarrhea, elevation in blood pressure, rapid heartbeat, sweaty palms, heart palpitations, dizziness, migraine headaches, cold hands or feet, shortness of breath, and chest pain (Miller & Smith, 2016). Warshaw, M.D., indicates that when employees find themselves in jobs for which they are not really suited for or in which they see no future in, workplace itself becomes a major stressor (1979, 173). When faced with such situation, some employees choose to quit and change their career paths, while an overwhelming majority prefers to stuck with a job that does not satisfy them. The vast majority of unhappy employees prefer to keep their existing jobs due to outside forces, such as financial needs, lack of suitable jobs, fear of changing jobs, and more. However, considering psychological and physiological effects of stress, this is not a healthy way of continuing life. One way of changing this unhealthy pattern is to provide employees with career counseling. A program of career counseling can help such individuals assess their interests and capabilities, as well as guiding them to new opportunities that would eventually decrease their stress levels (Warshaw, 1979, 173). A career counselor can objectively assess employees’ needs, and introduce them to a variety of options that responds to their …show more content…
Considering their contribution to an individual’s overall well-being, sports and recreational activities are highly beneficial; they teach teamwork, boost self-esteem, and improve physical health. Furthermore, aerobic exercise is any rhythmic activity that promotes a sustained increase in heart rate, respiration, and muscle metabolism (Warshaw, 1979, 162). Aerobics promote cardiovascular health through reducing the influence of high-risk factors of coronary heart disease. Moreover, exercise activities involving muscular fitness and strength offer several health benefits; they increase resistance against tension and rigidity developed in the muscles by strengthening muscular power. Likewise, tension relieving exercises contribute to overall health by releasing stress-related tension.
