Communication is a basic human right and the exchange of information by which messages are sent and understood by individuals or groups of people. There are different types of communication such as one to one communication, written communication and group communication. These can be formal or informal for example: in a health and social care setting it would involve formal communication. Effective communication can either be verbal or non-verbal. Non-verbal communication refers to the messages that we send without using words for example: facial expressions and body language. This essay will discuss the importance of communication in a health and social care setting by relating it to a case study.

There are a range of ways to overcome these barriers which include staff training: communicating effectively with anxious, depressed or aggressive people cannot be developed simply by obtaining information so formal training courses provide opportunities to practice these important skills.
