Mammalian target of rapamycin, otherwise known as mTOR is a kinase that integrates environmental signals which in turn translates these signals into cellular responses. mTOR is involved in many processes including: metabolism, tumorigenesis, immune function, and ageing. As a result, rapamycin is used clinically to halt the aging process by maximizing life-span expectancy. There are two mTOR complexes (mTORC) in which rapamycin effects: TORC1 and TORC2. TORC1 is involved in anabolic cellular metabolism such as cell growth and proliferation, while TORC2 is involved in cell survival with limited understanding of this process. mTORC1 is activated by high nutrient availability and various growth factors, like insulin, which promotes the synthesis
