Essay On Grass Tetany

The physiological processes of a mammal are in a unique balance where any deviation from the normal can result in a pathological condition. For example, mammals require a continuous intake of nutrients to ensure that every vital process can be maintained. If these processes are not maintained; the organism will begin to absorb its own nutrients, thereby reducing the availability of resources within the organism (Odette, 2005). An organism that is absorbing its own nutrients will be unable to sufficiently complete the numerous processes that are necessary for its continued functioning and thus, the organism will begin to experience symptoms associated with malnutrition. If the malnutrition is prolonged, the organism will develop comorbidities as a result of the decreased resource …show more content…
The epidemiology of grass tetany occurs primarily in regions that experience periods of prolonged temperature fluctuations that is representative of the changing seasons. For example, most wild grass enters a dormant state when temperatures fall below 6°C (Goff, 2006). This dormant state does not result in the death of the flora, but causes the roots to minimize their growth activity to ensure their continued survival throughout the winter. As the temperatures rise above 15°C, most forms of grass will emerge from their dormant state and will begin rapid growth (Goff, 2006). During these periods of rapid growth, the roots of the grass will require a greater allotment of nutrients and thus, fewer nutrients will be available in the leaves (Goff, 2006). Prolonged periods of insufficient magnesium consumption will require the use of internal magnesium pools to stave off the development of hypomagnesemia. As such, grass tetany will develop if the cattle enters a state of hypomagnesemia and is not provided any additional sources of magnesium (Goff,

Lamarck described that living beings acquired traits during the course of their lives based on the needs of the organism, and these traits could then be passed on to the offspring of the organism. For example, according to Lamarckism, a giraffe has a long neck because initially, the giraffe wished for a long neck in order to feed on tall plants, and over the course of the giraffe’s life, its neck progressively lengthened as a result. This “change” would then be passed onto the giraffe’s offspring, and the offspring would continue where their parent(s) left off until they had long enough necks to feed. The theory that Lamarck proposed is incorrect as it suggested that the traits were initially “acquired” during the life the organism and were…

Within Mali, kwashiorkor is known as funu bana—or “swelling sickness”—because of edemas which form in the abdomen, face, hands, and feet (Dettwyler 1994, 73). The young girl’s mother asked Dettwyler for help through the procuration of medicine; Dettwyler answered that medicine would not help. Only by feeding her daughter a little more protein at each meal would she be able to heal and cure the disease. Tennessee has over 206,000 horses, which ranks it sixth in the nation (Tennessee Equine Facts and Stats, 2012). In most cases, these horses reside on small acreage farms where they serve as pets or companion animals. Although a common practice, small acreage farms may nevertheless face challenges in providing a proper diet and safe environment for horses. There are several reasons why farms with limited pasture capacity may find it demanding to meet the requirements necessary for healthy horses. First, horses can consume large amounts of forage while often grazing up to eighteen horses each day (Natural Resources Conservation Service, 2008).…
