I chose this piece of artwork because I find Weston’s work to be quit intriguing. It is all very detailed and the lighting he uses is simply amazing. Weston has a lot of nude works of art, but I think it really shows the beauty of the human body especially in relation to other things in nature. We see a lot of his nude photographs trace back to his photo “Pepper” from 1930. I believe this photo is linked to it, as well. I’ll post the “Pepper” photograph so you can see for yourselves!
The way the pepper creases and folds in the photograph is the same way this nude model’s legs crease and bend into a slightly askew position. His photographs are just so detailed. In “Knees” it is as though I can actually see the model’s veins and hair follicles. You can even zoom in on the photograph to see even more fine details. That is how distinct he makes his work and it is fascinating to me. I think with comparing a lot of his photos to a pepper, a piece of nature, he is explaining how natural and beautiful the human body is. But I did find out that the artwork is all about his lifelong goal to capture the essence of ideal beauty. His work receives some criticism from Feminists, but I think his work will always be adored and admired. It really is beautiful.
