I was assigned to write about Walker Evans, born in the USA (1903-1975) who is considered a noticeable American photographer during his time, his art is considered influential during the twentieth century because he is considered a creator in the documentary style in the American photography. His photographs documented American life and culture during 30’s/70’s. I believe his journey through photography is a journey through concept, belief, and art history. At the beginning of his practice Evans admired and reflected the American history as his work documents the actual lifestyle of poor common people, it also described some of their agony and misery, this is why his art became a record that describes the important lifestyle during that time. It touches my soul as I can feel the people inside those photos are trying to say something and explain their suffering.
I don’t think his work reflects the technology of photography nowadays because it was manual simple technology, and nowadays we have very advanced technology in photography, which is the digital technique. However, the subjects of life and the way Evans expressed his feelings is the same during all times and decades we can find poor people nowadays who suffer in the black and white way the same as Evans early photos during the 30’s.
To conclude Evans is a black and white artist. The value and influence of his early start touched me more than the colorful part of his art. I find Evans a hero who took on his responsibility on the task of documenting the American journey in life. I wish we could have somebody like him in the Arabic region that can document a record of our history. It’s very hard to find loyal artists who start their journey in life and art for noble
