The new play was sprouted from a musical called ‘Art School Musical’, as a result that school life has become a label of Edward’s play. No matter how was the stories unfold, the props such as the desks, classrooms, students and teachers would never disapeared. As time passed by, these elements have became symbolic objects in Edward’s play. It would help us to understand Edward better when we know that he was a teacher in the college and wrote his script in the spare time. In his play, Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai became two students of an art school where they felt in love with each other when they were learning painting. However, not every first love would end up well and so did the butterful lovers. In Edward’s play, most of the plots from the original butterful lovers were remained for example, the meeting in the pavilion, the 18-mile farewell, the refusion of marriage, the wailing over the grave and the transformation into butterflies. However, the character designs have been changed into a clearer contrast as Liang Shanbo became more inferior and cowardly while Zhu Yingtai became braver than ever. Although the story ended differently in Edward’s play, with the death of Zhu Yingtai the beautiful things always faded away rapidly. Time have passed but the purity of love has never changed.
