In William Shakespeare’s epic drama Much Ado About Nothing, passionate love is shown through two love stories. Claudio a young soldier has fallen for a young beautiful maiden named Hero, who is the daughter of the Governor of Messina, Leonato. Beatrice, Leonato niece, has an eye for the hansom soldier named Benedick who is fighting alongside Prince Don Pedro. Shakespeare’s vivid detail helps to depict the hard love seen through these lovers. In Shakespeare’s drama the story of love is unraveled through the theme, the roles of the characters, and the goals achieved by those characters.
To begin, the drama brings about this overall theme of love and these two opposites of love and how they are unveil throughout the play. One love story shown in the drama is one of this fairytale like love. This is presented by the young lovers Claudio and beautiful Hero; their love for each other is true and undeniable. Claudio makes his love evident to Benedick “I would scarce trust myself, though I had sworn the contrary, if Hero would be my wife” (Shakespeare). Prince Don Pedro is a very powerful character in the drama, he is very smart and a humble nobleman. His cunning nature brings about the love in the drama, while Don Pedro has not found love of his own; he does his best to find it for his friends. Don Pedro brings Claudio and Hero love together, which becomes corrupted by his brother Don John. Don John is a very mischievous character who goal is to destroy Claudio and Hero’s love.
