According to the Educational Policies and Accreditation Standards, Council on Social Work Education, Inc., competencies are “measurable practice behaviors that are comprised of knowledge, values, and skills. The goal of the outcome approach is to demonstrate the integration and application of the competencies in practice with individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities.” (2008, 2012) There are ten core competencies that in order to be proficient in practice each social worker must need to learn to apply and practice in the field. The first core competency states that a social worker will identify as a professional and conduct oneself accordingly. Social workers serve as representative of the profession, its core values, and its mission. As a social worker one should be responsible to know the history of the profession and commit herself or himself to the enhancement of the profession as well as one’s conduct and growth. The Elms College offers their student a strong back ground in social work, its history and people who had made the difference in this profession in the Introduction to Social Work ( SWK 101) class, offered on Session I as part of their Social Work Program. The foundation level practice behavior of this competency indicates that one of the roles of a social worker is to advocates for client access to services.
