Early Childhood Literacy: Urban VS Suburban Childhood literacy is the what children know about reading and writing before they are at the age to actually read and write (Early Literacy). Children are supposed to be able to identify letters and increase their literacy before they enter kindergarten. Sadly, there are only 37 percent of children arrive to kindergarten without their necessary proper literacy skills (America’s Early Childhood). According to an article from a study written by various Universities suggest that, ”reading aloud to children is the single most important parental activity to prepare children to succeed in learning to read” (Theriot). Around the country, there children from low-income communities who are entering kindergarten with little to no literacy skills (America’s Early Childhood). This makes it harder for them to be able to catch up to the other students in the class that are from other communities because they are behind on their literacy skills (America’s Early Childhood). The literacy rates differ from Urban minority infants and Suburban white middle class infants. “Children who grow up in low-income households have an increased risk of developmental delay and poor school achievement, contributing to an ongoing cycle of poverty” (Green, Cori M). In low income homes there are not a lot of verbal communication …show more content…
One of the reasons is the lack of reading exposure. In low income neighborhoods there is only one book read per every three hundred children and in middle/ high income neighborhoods there are about 13 books read per one child (Carter). In most low income homes education is not one of the main priorities in a child’s life. Therefore they tend to fall behind on education and language, because they hear 30 million fewer words than middle class infants by the age of four
