2.1 Explain How To Adapt Communication With Children And Young People

If a child doesn’t have good communication skills, then the ability to form and maintain friendships can be affected with some children becoming withdrawn because how can we expect a child to be able to read, write or spell a word if they can’t say the word or sound it out? They will also find it hard to understand what they have read if they have struggled to hear. Other children could display difficulties with their behaviour because many children with identified behaviour needs have previously unidentified SLCN. They may find many aspects of learning a lot harder including all the aspects of literacy skills which in turn will affect them across the whole curriculum. Children may struggle to listen to and understand any instructions given. A child that doesn’t have good communication skills may not have a wide range of vocabulary so may have trouble understanding. Children may get frustrated which could result in behaviour difficulties such as misbehaving or shouting out silly answers as they haven’t understood. Children may struggle to make and keep friends and may become withdrawn and feel very alone and think they are worthless as they can’t do their academic work or keep friends thinking they are always to blame or that they are rubbish and that everything is their fault. Friends that they previously had may no longer want to know them as they have less in common if they start to fall …show more content…
This can affect them early, severely and for life.
• In areas of poverty, over 50% of children are starting school with delayed communication skills. Their speech may be unclear, vocabulary is smaller, sentences are shorter and they are able to understand only simple instructions.
