Abstract The following pages will overview my experience with interviewing my cousin, who was diagnosed with autism and had Early Childhood Intervention due to his mild to moderate severity level for his diagnosis. He is now 15 years old facing the challenges of a typical teenager as well as his own challenges that individuals with autism go through daily. For privacy reasons, he will be referred to as Jay throughout this summary. Though I have known him since he was born, I never truly understood what he goes through and had a curiosity wondering his views towards different factors in his life. My father and his siblings first came to America from India around the late 1980’s and since they were all raising children in a foreign land filled with a bright future, they stuck together throughout the beginning years of their adulthood in America till they were all stable on their feet, including living together in the same apartment complex all taking care of the new generation of children that increased the family. While I was growing up, the first half of my lifetime was constant spent around my extended family when it was not spent at school, hence the reason why my extended family had a tight bond with each other, especially with the younger children. Jay and his brother were both diagnosed with autism at a young age, but since he had a “lighter” severity level than his brother, he had the opportunity to go through early childhood intervention so that he can adapt to his environment and be able to strengthen his brain as he grows up. Today, he’s a sophomore in high school about to turn 16 years old and receives his education at his neighborhood high school in general education classrooms. The main goal that I wanted to get from this interview was to get more in depth with was he views about his education. He’s a reserved person who doesn’t really talk too much and keeps to himself unless he has any questions and asks to seek more information about it. In family gatherings, he usually does his own thing and if he wants to hang around with the cousins, he will for a short time span and then continue to do another activity for himself. Based off of what I observe from him, I wanted to also know how his social interaction skills are like and what goes through his mind when he communicates with friends and other family
