Within 18 months this parent realized that her child was unable to put two words together. This raised a flag immediately and caused concern for the parents. It wasn’t until three years old when the pediatric doctor diagnosed their child with autism. It was devastating to hear states the parent. She felt like it was coming but wasn’t ready to face reality. The diagnosis immediately determined that their child was eligible to receive special education services. So around three years old, the child started to receive speech services as well as behavior support. Knowing that her child was going to need additional help for a long time was devastating. For example, visuals, handouts, and videos all helped her child learn in a way he was comfortable with. She would also like to state that it is important that all teachers attend the IEP meetings. Going to the IEP meetings with help create a plan that will help children with disabilities learn. The long-term goals for this parent is to have her child be happy. She wants her child to fit in and be able to socialize with everyone. Building skills are also part of the long-term goals she has for her child.
