Imagine a world where childhood obesity was socially accepted and society took no steps in bringing awareness to drug abuse among students with programs like D.A.R.E. Of course this is not the case as we see countless commercials and government intervention of such issues, especially in bringing early intervention measures to the youth and providing services for such cases. But as the discussion for more services involving mental health gets debated, our lawmakers seem to be ignoring the signs of continuing to block out the seriousness of this issue.
Today, we continue to have outreach programs and helplines for people with physical health problems but as the need for mental health services grows, society seems to be putting these needs to the sidelines as if they are not real problems. As shootings and other tragedies are become more and more common, society needs to look into the prevention of these occurrences by taking mental illnesses more seriously and tackling the causes at an earlier age by providing awareness and services to the youth. Although considered taboo to speak of, more and more adolescences are showing signs of early mental illnesses but are unaware of it because of a lack of education in that area. A study done by the World Health Organization suggests that the criteria for at least one mental illness is met by one-third of the youth in the U.S and out of this group, 4 out of 10 of these young people meet the criteria for an additional mental disorder”…
