According to Mayo Clinic, “nearly seventy percent of the United States population are on at least one prescription drug”. Prescription drugs are on the rise not only in the United States but around the world. The NIDA For Teens states” prescription drugs are strong medications” that are prescribed by a doctor that have “potential benefits but also harmful effects”. Prescription drugs are prescribed by a doctor to help with the immune system and the body to get back to its normal state. For example, let’s say a person just got surgery on their knee and a doctor prescribes oxycontin to help relieve the pain. The oxycontin is used for a limited amount of time but that does not stop people to keep using it even after they have recovered from surgery. This is where the global issue comes in because people are starting to misuse their leftover oxycontin and other prescription drugs.
