The first one was Captain James Cook, he was one of the first European to come to the Northwest. He failed at finding the passage and so did George Vancouver and Robert Grey. On his search for the northwest passage he started by heading north and ended up going through the most dangerous of waters. He finds a river now known as the Columbia River. Through the rules of the Doctrine of discovery the United States was given claim over the territory since an American had found it. Robert Greys expedition lasted 7 days. During this time he started trading with the tribes up and down the river. When he started heading North he ran into George Vancouver, Robert Grey talked about his discovery and made him angry. Vancouver ended up going to the Columbia river and mapping it
