To some the war was clearly an act of America marching onto Mexican land and provoking an attack, but to a majority it was a saying that American blood was spilled on US soil, in disputed territory between Mexican and Texas. This all really ignited when Polk sent Slidell over to Mexico to try and negotiate a price for land, Mexico respectfully disagreed and sent Slidell home with news that did not please Polk.
