On Thursday June 25th I met Rose Haisler. She is a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine and a friend. Dr Haisler is board certified emergency medicine physician at OSF Saint Mary Medical Center in Galesburg, the medical director for OSF Life Flight, a team member on our regional medical response team and former medical director for Peoria Area EMS System. I talked with Dr Haisler about this class and our assignment. I shared with Dr Haisler my personal experience with a chiropractor and my struggle with understanding this class.
She started by explaining a little about osteopathic medicine and that provides all of the benefits of modern medicine including prescription drugs, surgery, and the use of modern technology to diagnose and evaluate. Osteopathic medicine offers the added benefit of hands-on diagnosis and treatment through a system of therapy known as osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM). Dr Haisler described OMM as a core set of techniques that are based on an ideology by Andrew Still which affirmed the existence of a tissue layer that connects all parts of the body called a fascia. These myofascia are not like muscle because they have no vascular component, but connects, bands, binds and stabilize. She described this as the link to all body parts, “it’s kind of like the glue”. With knowing and understanding how the body moves and is put together it helps to understand a few concepts and theories of manipulative medicine.
