2. The operational definition(s) of the dependent variable(s): There are two dependent variables in this research: the body mass index which was calculated according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention Guidelines (CDC) and the food consumption. They have trained researchers to measure the height (cm) and also the weight (kg) of each participants. Body mass index was adjusted for age and gender to create percentiles. They classified the people who had the body max index of 25-30 as being overweight and people who had the body max index of 30 and above were classified as obese. When the coders decipher the video recordings of each family they have to go by the ABC mealtime coding system. Action oriented behaviors such as talking on the phone, getting up to retrieve or put away food or dishes, bathroom break, or anything that requires the participants to be away from the table. “Get your elbows of the table” is an example of Behavior Control that intends to stop, direct, or modify another family member’s behavior. “Stop fighting with your sibling” is an example of controlling behavior. Interpersonal Communication are verbal exchanges to share information between family members. Two coders who are unbiased to the objective of the study viewed and coded each videotaped meal recordings of the families separately. VCode software was used to simultaneously code multiple individuals across the categories mentioned above. 20% of the mealtimes for the study was double coded to guard against rater drift. To create proportion the total time amount of time engaged in each category for each person is divided by the total amount of interaction time. The first 20 minutes of each meal was used …show more content…
