Corey (2017) emphasises that all theories contribute uniquely to how we understand human behaviour. It is common for counselors to take a hybrid approach to theories, in which they bring together several compatible characteristics from different theories to develop an individualized approach (Lyon et al., 2014). Youths who show disruptive behaviours often have deficiencies in cognition and social problem solving abilities (Larmar, 2006). Disruptive youths are physically and verbally aggressive, and engage in behaviours that result from poor social skills (Ruttledge & Petrides, 2011). Kendall (2012) recognises the importance of using theories to make sense of the student’s behaviour choices to determine an effective intervention. The core principle of cognitive-behavioural approach is that people are not disturbed by the way they view things (Ruttledge & Petrides, 2011). As a result of physical, emotional, and social stresses, Eileen is exhibiting a range of behaviour misconduct as a result of falsifications of reality based on incorrect premises and misunderstandings in life (Gillen, 2003). CBT interventions are effective because it understands that problems surface from the interactions among behaviour, cognitive, distress, social factors, and environmental factors (Ghafoori, 2004). Therefore, the counsellor would need to consider different factors of Eileen’s life experience that could be contributing to her behaviour. CBT uses strategies that challenge individual’s current way of thinking, acting, and feeling (Kendall, 2012). Then using a combination of cognitive and behavioural techniques to help clients develop self-management and problem solving skills so that they move towards behavioural independence (Lyon et al.,
