1a. Proctor doomed himself because Deputy Governor Danforth would not let him survive if he didn’t give up the confession he signed. Proctor realized that if he gave this up, his name would mean nothing, due to him lying about him seeing demons, and signing his name on the confession, he had given up his name. He said that although they had already taken his soul, he wants to keep his name.
1b. I believe their was no other way out of his situation than to lie and lose the meaning of his name, or to die. Since he felt about his name that way, there was no other option than to kill himself.
1c. Although many people contributed to his death, the one most responsible was his wife, Elizabeth. First of all, she had fired Abigail after finding out about her and her husband. Then, when she had to just tell the truth about the affair, she lied. The final action was the one that made the decision though, because Elizabeth told Proctor that it did not matter what happened to him, that she knew that nobody else would judge his actions except for himself. Proctor was a person who had some trouble in the past, but he had a good wife who forgives him. So he has some doubt, but he had to take action despite how bad he felt about it, and he died doing something he believed in. Having all of this conflict and trying times, Proctor makes an interesting and perfect hero.
2b. Yes, he is a hero. He had to go through a lot to help his wife, who was innocent of an accused crime. After all of his, he finally forgave himself for what he did. That makes him a hero.
