Anyone could be a leader but not every leader is an effective one. There are many different definitions as to what a leader is. I found broad definitions, narrow definitions, basic definitions, and more complex ones. Leadership provides direction for a company. Without an effective leader, there may not be a successful, or motivated, staff of employees. However, a leader does not have to hold a managerial position. A regular staff member can be more motivating and inspiring than a manager and that can make them a more effective leader. John Quincy Adams said “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more, you are a leader.” Effective leaders have more specific characteristics rather than job titles. With that being said, leadership is present at all levels of an organization. There are five different types of leadership power. According to the textbook, many mangers believe their effectiveness as a leader is determined by how much and what kind of power they have. The different types are reward power, punishment power, expert power, legitimate power, and referent power. Reward power is the ability to meet the needs of another, or control him or her, by giving rewards for desired behaviors. In other words, the manager gives some type of reward to an employee as a means to influence the employee to act. It almost sounds like bribery. The rewards can be either tangible or intangible.
